The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Agriculture Department under the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Blue Economy of the Republic of Seychelles have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen bilateral cooperation in agricultural research and education.
The agreement was signed during the official visit of the Prime Minister to Seychelles and aims to enhance collaboration in agricultural research, capacity building, education, and technology transfer between the two countries.
Five-Year Work Plan Focuses on Sustainable Agriculture
To implement the agreement, both countries have also signed a five-year Work Plan covering the period from 2026 to 2031.
The plan focuses on key agricultural areas including:
- Climate-smart agriculture
- Horticulture development
- Livestock development
- Post-harvest management
- Food and nutritional security
The collaboration is expected to support knowledge exchange, joint research programmes, and the sharing of agricultural technologies and best practices.

Promoting Agricultural Innovation and Capacity Building
According to the agreement, both countries will work together to strengthen institutional partnerships through the exchange of scientists, researchers, and students. The initiative also aims to improve agricultural productivity, build technical expertise, and support sustainable agricultural development.
The partnership addresses emerging challenges such as climate change, resource management, and food security through international cooperation and research-based solutions.
Strengthening Global Agricultural Partnerships
ICAR currently maintains more than 100 Memoranda of Understanding with agricultural institutions and organizations across the world. The new agreement with Seychelles further strengthens India’s engagement with global agricultural partners and supports broader efforts toward sustainable agriculture and food security.
