ICAR-MGIFRI, KVK Parsauni, and ATMA Promote Soil Health and Integrated Farming Under Khet Bachao Abhiyan

As part of the nationwide Khet Bachao Abhiyan–2026, ICAR–Mahatma Gandhi Integrated Farming Research Institute (ICAR-MGIFRI), in collaboration with KVK Parsauni and ATMA, organized a farmer awareness programme and Kisan Chaupal in Janerwa village of East Champaran district, Bihar.

The programme focused on promoting soil health restoration, balanced fertilizer use, green manuring, crop diversification, farm mechanization, and Integrated Farming Systems (IFS) to support sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture.

During the technical sessions, farmers were educated on the benefits of laser land levelling, Happy Seeder technology, green manuring through Dhaincha (Sesbania), pulse-based cropping systems, and scientific nutrient management practices. Experts highlighted the importance of regular soil testing, balanced fertilizer application, crop residue recycling, and biological nitrogen sources to improve soil fertility and reduce dependency on chemical fertilizers.

Special emphasis was placed on Integrated Farming Systems, particularly for the flood-prone and waterlogged regions of North Bihar. Farmers were informed about the potential benefits of integrating crops, fisheries, livestock, and horticulture to improve income opportunities, resource utilization, and climate resilience.

The programme also covered fish health management, vermicomposting, conservation agriculture, and sustainable farming practices aimed at enhancing long-term productivity while protecting natural resources.

A total of 42 farmers participated in the programme and interacted with scientists and extension experts on topics related to soil fertility, nutrient-use efficiency, sustainable agriculture, and livelihood diversification.

Supporting Farmer Awareness and Information Access

Awareness programmes like these play an important role in bringing scientific agricultural knowledge closer to farmers. Similarly, platforms such as KisanSabha help strengthen communication across the agricultural ecosystem by connecting farmers with dealers, transporters, buyers, and relevant agricultural updates. Access to timely information and stronger networks can support farmers in making more informed decisions related to farming and market opportunities.
