Lucknow: Agriculture continues to play a central role in Uttar Pradesh’s economy, supporting millions of farming families and contributing significantly to the state’s rural development. As one of India’s largest agricultural producers, Uttar Pradesh has strengthened its agricultural ecosystem through investments in irrigation, farmer welfare programmes, agricultural infrastructure, technology adoption, and market reforms.
According to recent assessments, the value of agricultural production and allied activities in Uttar Pradesh has increased substantially over the past decade, reflecting improvements in productivity, irrigation facilities, diversification, and market access. The state remains a leading producer of food grains, sugarcane, milk, fruits, vegetables, and horticultural crops. Uttar Pradesh also ranks among the country’s top producers of fruits and vegetables, highlighting the growing importance of horticulture in enhancing farm incomes.
Irrigation and Sustainable Farming Initiatives
A key factor behind this growth has been the expansion of irrigation infrastructure. The state has achieved more than 86 percent irrigation coverage, helping farmers reduce dependence on monsoon rainfall and improve cropping intensity. Investments in canals, tube wells, and water management systems have contributed to higher agricultural productivity and greater resilience against climate-related challenges.
The adoption of renewable energy has also gained momentum through the PM-KUSUM scheme. Between 2017-18 and 2025, over 86,000 solar pumps were installed, helping farmers reduce irrigation costs and improve access to reliable energy for farming operations.
Focus on Farmer Welfare and Financial Security
Farmer welfare programmes continue to be an important component of Uttar Pradesh’s agricultural strategy. Direct income support through PM-KISAN, crop insurance under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, and other welfare initiatives have helped improve financial security for farming households. The state has also expanded its digital farmer registry, enabling more efficient delivery of government benefits and agricultural services.

Technology and Agricultural Modernisation
Technology is increasingly becoming an important part of farming in the state. Initiatives promoting drone usage, farmer training programmes, agricultural extension activities, and digital governance systems are helping farmers adopt modern agricultural practices. Programmes such as Kisan Pathshalas and Gram Panchayat-level awareness campaigns have also strengthened the dissemination of scientific farming knowledge.
The state has further invested in agricultural infrastructure, including packhouses, rural markets, mandi modernisation, and digital marketing platforms that improve transparency and market accessibility for farmers.
Strengthening Agricultural Market Linkages
As agriculture becomes increasingly market-oriented, access to reliable networks and timely information is becoming more important for farmers. Platforms such as KisanSabha contribute to this ecosystem by connecting farmers with dealers, transporters, and other agricultural stakeholders. Such connectivity can help improve communication across the agricultural value chain and support farmers in exploring market opportunities more efficiently.
With continued investments in infrastructure, technology, farmer welfare, and agricultural services, Uttar Pradesh’s agriculture sector remains an important driver of rural prosperity and economic transformation.
