“‘Cereals’ and ‘fruits and vegetables’ (two largest groups of crops) together accounted for more than 52% of sector in 2011-12, and increased to 55% in 2019-20,” the ministry said.

Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest output of cereals in all the years, although its share in all India output has marginally decreased from 18.6% in 2011-12 to 18.5% in 2019-20. The share of Madhya Pradesh has gone up considerably from 6.2% in 2011-12 to 10.0% in 2019-20, it said.

India ranks second worldwide in arable land (156.07 million hectares), third in production of cereals; second in groundnut, fruits, vegetables, sugarcane, tea; and first in jute.

“Worldwide as of 2019, the country had the largest herds of buffaloes, goats; and ranked second in cattle, sheep; and seventh in chicken population,” the ministry said, adding that it is the largest producer of milk; third in production of eggs and fifth in production of meat.

Kapas accounted for nearly 95% of output of ‘fibre’ crops. During this period, the output of kapas was lowest in 2018-19 at Rs 59,000 crore.

During this period, the output of milk, meat and eggs, and fishing and aqua culture also increased.
