The cultivation of the world’s costliest vegetable which is named as ‘hop shoots’\u202fhas recently started on a trial basis in Bihar\u2019s Aurangabad district. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Amresh Singh, 38, a farmer from Karamdih village under Navinagar block of Bihar\u2019s Aurangabad\u202fdistrict, is the first to start hop-shoots cultivation in 5 kathas of his land. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Singh who is an intermediate-pass from Hazaribagh\u2019s St. Columbus College in 2012 has recently said that if Prime Minister Narendra Modi makes a special\u202farrangement for the promotion of cultivation of \u2018hop-shoots\u2019, it will make the farmers earn 10\u202ftimes more than they can do by other\u202fmeans of agriculture\u202fwithin a\u202fcouple of years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As per reports, \u2018Hop-Shoots\u2019(Humulus-lupulus)\u00a0used to be\u202fsold for 1000 pounds a kg\u00a0even six years ago in international markets\u202fwhich comes roughly to about Rs 1\u00a0lakh. The crop which\u00a0is\u00a0rarely seen in the Indian market\u00a0can be\u00a0bought only by placing a\u202fspecial order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I am happy to say that more than 60 per cent\u202fof its cultivation has happened successfully,” Singh said. The cultivation of hop-shoots (humulus-lupulus) is going on under the supervision of agricultural scientist Dr. Lal of the Indian Vegetable Research\u202fInstitute at Varanasi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I have planted the saplings of this vegetable two\u202fmonths ago after having brought it\u202ffrom the Indian Vegetable Research Institute at Varanasi. I hope\u202fit will be a grand success and turnaround agriculture in Bihar\u202ftoo,”\u202fSingh said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The farming of hop-shoots is mainly found in European countries like Britain, Germany, and others.\u202f Earlier\u202fit was done in Himachal Pradesh\u202fbut stopped since its marketing did not take off because of the high price.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Amresh also told us that he also\u202fcultivates\u202fmany other medicinal and aromatic plants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“In the farming sector, taking a risk with the self-confidence\u202fultimately helps the farmer to win. I have taken the risk for experimenting with the cultivation of hop-shoot in Bihar and hope, it will set a benchmark,”\u202fhe added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
