In addition to this, two consecutive floods in Kerala and\u00a0climate change\u00a0have led to its prices growing between\u00a0Rs 600 \u2013 650 per kg, which is more as compared to the previous season which was\u00a0Rs 450 per kg.\u00a0Mace is selling for Rs 1,900 per kg, which is also more than last year\u2019s price which is Rs 1,100 per kg. Nutmeg taffy \u2013 an edible candy made from javetri, is also being sold for\u00a0<strong>Rs 800 per kg.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As it is an exotic spice, it has a good demand in urban society nowadays. Given this rise in demand, the flood-hit farmers are expected to increase the already soaring prices of nutmeg by at least\u00a0<strong>Rs 15-25 per kg<\/strong>\u00a0before Diwali. This move is driven by the devastating and disrupting floods in Kerala that occurred twice in a short interval of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Farmers lost much of their crop production to these floods and are now looking forward to compensating those losses through price rises. It is apparently a very sensitive situation for the farmers as there lies a big confusion ahead of them \u2013 whether to grow this crop or not, as it does give good value for price but the region has been frequently struck by floods and cyclones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Javetri &amp; Jaiphal:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Its crop consists of two components\u00a0<strong>\u2013 the <\/strong>rind known as \u201cjavetri\u201d\u00a0(mace) and the seed\u00a0is known as \u201cjaiphal\u201d\u00a0(nutmeg). Jaiphal is a prominent winter spice that helps in treating cold and flu. Also, it is nowadays being used as an ingredient in many\u00a0desserts.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nutmeg is used to season dishes, found in baked items, desserts, and entrees (mostly Indian and Moroccan cuisines).
