According to the Global Hunger Index released by the Food and Agriculture Organization across the world, India ranked\u00a0101st<\/strong>\u00a0among\u00a0116\u00a0<\/strong>countries worldwide.\u00a0Ironically the report was published on\u00a0October 16th<\/strong>\u00a0which is also observed globally as\u00a0World Food Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A day that marks the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization<\/strong> (FAO) of the UN. It is also a day that is aimed at tackling and eradicating global hunger across the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although much outrage has been shown by the Women and Child Development<\/strong> (WCD)  Minister Smriti Irani<\/strong> over the calculation of the rankings on the Global Hunger Index.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is still a very sad fact that India as a country ranked below Pakistan (92), Bangladesh (76), and Nepal (76)<\/strong> who have all fared better in the aspect of feeding its citizens than India according to the rankings published in the global human index.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fall in rankings from\u00a094th<\/strong>\u00a0in 2020 to\u00a0101st<\/strong>\u00a0in 2021 also has to be attributed to the spread of the\u00a0COVID\u00a0<\/strong>pandemic\u00a0across India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the stats published by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs an additional\u00a070-161<\/strong>\u00a0million people are facing food crises due to the spread of the covid pandemic across the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another factor that affected this fall in rankings could be the inclusion of\u00a09<\/strong>\u00a0other countries in the rankings in\u00a02021<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although a score of 27.5<\/strong> in the GHI which India achieved in 2021<\/strong> is considered serious<\/strong> it is still way lower compared to India’s GHI score of 37.5<\/strong> which fell in the alarming <\/strong>category in the 2000s.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is GHI?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Global Hunger Index is the ranking of countries worldwide a jointly published by the US-based Concern Worldwide and Germany-based Welthungerhilfe<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It calculates global hunger on the following basis:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under Nourishment<\/strong>:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Share of the population with insufficient caloric intake.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Child Wasting:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Share of children under age five who have low weight for their height, reflecting acute undernutrition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Child Stunting<\/strong>:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Share of children under age five who have low height for their age, reflecting chronic undernutrition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Child Mortality:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The mortality rate of children under the age of five.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though India showed improvement in indicators such as the under-5 mortality rate. The prevalence of stunting among children and the prevalence of undernourishment owing to inadequate food remained high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
